Translations you can trust

Why do customers trust us? Based on the feedback I’ve received over the years, it comes down to one main factor – QUALITY.

It’s because we consistently produce translations of the highest quality for our clients. So, what’s our secret? How are we able to create such high-quality translations time after time?

Simple. We only get our linguists to translate into their native languages. Think about it. If you had an important Chinese document you wanted translated into English, which of the following two translators would YOU choose:

a) A native Chinese speaker whose English is good, but who can’t accurately use English idioms and sometimes makes simple English grammar mistakes?

b) A native English speaker who can read Chinese and instinctively employs the right English grammar and the right English phrases?

Whose translation would impress your clients the most?

We’d pick b), the native English speaker. In fact, we’re so serious about this, we’ve made this part of our official company policy. Add to this our stringent proofreading procedure and you begin to see why the quality of our translation is consistently that good. This is why our clients trust us.

Translation Agencies – What’s the Difference between Average and Excellent?

What makes one translation agency stand out from the rest? Yes, of course, there’s the service, the turnaround time, the price. But there’s also another, even more fundamental factor.

Think about the goal of translation. When a translator sits down in front of the computer to translate something, what is his goal? What is the absolute best result he can hope for?

At DC English Translation, we believe that the pinnacle of translation success is this:

To create a document that doesn’t sound like a translation at all.

It should sound like an original-language document, so that it appeals to the ear and the sensibilities of a native speaker.

An excellent translation agency consistently produces translations of this standard, while an average translation agency consistently falls short, and this matters to you as the customer. Better translations will help you open more doors, help you move ahead in your industry, and create more business.

3 Things You MUST KNOW When Looking for a Translation Agency

Believe me – if you want to find the most suitable translation agency, you have to know what to look for. The following three tips will put you firmly on the right track.

1. Is their English up to scratch?

If you want to have a Chinese document translated into English, find out if the agency you’re considering has translators who are native-level English speakers. This is really, really important!

Now, you might be thinking: ‘How can I be sure the translation agency actually hires native-level or close to native-level English translators?’ Unfortunately, you can’t. But you can get an indication of an agency’s English capability by checking out its website. Look to see if the agency has an English website, and assess whether it’s well-written.

Does it seem like it was written by a native speaker?

If you’re not sure, ask a friend or colleague who’s proficient enough in English to be able to tell.

I’ve come across many Taiwanese translation agencies whose English websites are littered with grammatical errors or who don’t have English websites at all. And if the English on their own websites is amiss, what are the chances your translation will be any better?

2. Don’t go for dirt cheap

Don’t get me wrong, dirt cheap isn’t always bad.

If the document you want translated is only going to be circulated within your company, and so it doesn’t matter if the logic is off and there are errors, then dirt cheap might very well be the way to go.

However, if the translation is for your clients, or your students, or your supervising instructor, you’ll want to invest a bit more money to receive a better quality translation.

By the way, let me clarify what I mean by dirt cheap. For either Chinese to English or English to Chinese translations, I consider anything under NT $1 per word “dirt cheap”. Translations this cheap are generally carried out by student-age translators,  who tend to produce literal documents that don’t have the usual flow of the target language, and sound stilted and unnatural.

For better quality translations, you’ll be looking at paying anywhere from NT $1.5 to $3.5 per word. Unfortunately, paying top dollar won’t automatically guarantee that you receive a high quality translation, but it will greatly improve your chances. If you want to be sure to receive a high quality translation every time, you have to choose an excellent translation agency, not an average one (see the above section for the difference between excellent and average translation agencies).

3. Make sure they offer post-sales service

These days, quite a few translations agencies offer post-sales service in the form of a free revision. Imagine you received your finished translation and you weren’t 100% satisfied. Perhaps one of the technical terms was not entirely accurate, or one of the sentences was not succinct enough. Many agencies will happily amend these mistakes at no extra charge. Think of this as a kind of warranty for the product you purchased – your translation.

At DC English Translation, we also offer this service, but not all translation agencies do. So, our advice is this: when looking for a translation agency, make sure they offer this specific service before sending your document off to be translated. You can do this by checking out their website, or you could simply call them and ask.
